MEXICO, N.Y. -- Today is a snow day.

That's a phrase children throughout the country long to hear on snowy winter mornings.

The Mexico school district was the only school system in Central New York to cancel school Tuesday, giving students, like fifth grader Ryan Gracey, an extra day to spend with visiting relatives.

"I was excited because I got to see my cousins and stuff. We don't get to see them a lot," Gracey said.

The cancelation extended the district's winter break as a band of lake effect snow dropped up to ten inches in some areas of Mexico.

It was a welcome sight for visiting Dallas native Cody Gracey, who took the opportunity to enjoy a rare chance to go sledding.

"I love this. We don't ever get this in Texas and I'm visiting all my cousins and this is the perfect thing. We get the day off to sled and it's fun," Cody Gracey said.

But before that fun can happen, school officials say several factors are considered when deciding if the weather is bad enough to warrant canceling school.

Mexico Superintendent Bob Pritchard says student safety is his first priority and he did not believe it was safe for students to travel to school Tuesday morning while heavy snow fell on the area.

"It's a dangerous mix to have snow plows on the road with buses, on roads that hadn't been cleared with visibility issues," Pritchard said.

But those concerns are lost on the children who enjoyed one last day and aren't looking forward to returning to the classroom.

"Ehh, not too happy, but you've gotta learn," said Gracey.

That learning will be back on track, as soon as Mother Nature hits the road.

Mexico school officials say the district has set aside five days to be used as snow days and if they are forced to cancel days beyond that, the district's spring break will be shortened.
