JOB TITLE: Consejero(a) ? Latino Student Success High School Mentor
PROGRAM AREA: Abriendo?Puertas (Opening Doors)
JOB OBJECTIVE:
Work with Hispanic-Latino high school students in college admissions
and financial aid activities in assigned high school(s) for students and their families in order to
impart hope, build confidence, communicate the importance of education, develop personal postsecondary
educational attainment goals and success strategies, help them navigate systems, and ring students and colleges together.
Essential Functions:
? Work as a contract employee of Latino Memphis, Inc. in the Latino Student Success initiative?
?Coordinate college access activities and college mentoring program for high school seniors in signed geographic region.?
?Provide one-on-one advising and case management to assist students and their families through
the transition to college, including but not limited to the college selection process and completing?applications and financial aid forms.?
?Provide career planning assistance by helping students set career goals and determine steps necessary to achieve them.
?Work with other educational institutions and non-profit organizations to connect with youth and families
?Participate in community outreach activities for students and their families.?
?Maintain timely and accurate professional records and all data on each assigned participant?
?Maintain professional discretion and confidentiality of student information?
?Document and track all activities?
?Perform related tasks as assigned
?
Organizational Relationships
?Represent Abriendo?Puertas to the community in conjunction with the Program Coordinator and their staff members?
?Develop relationships with high school faculty and staff with the intention of maximizing student success and access to higher education
?Assist in the coordination of initiatives promoting college readiness and access efforts under the direction of Latino Memphis?
?Demonstrate the flexibility needed to work within a ?hybrid? model?working both inside and outside the High School?
?Plan and attend after school and weekend activities on a regular basis?
Administration
? Provide regular reports to the Program Coordinator as required
? Attend organizational, staff and departmental meetings as assigned
Minimal Requirements / Performance Standards:
?Bachelors degree required?
?Fluent in English and Spanish?
?Preferred experience in college admissions, recruiting and/or financial aid?
?Must have valid Tennessee drivers license and reliable vehicle for transportation
?Public speaking experience?
?Ability to effectively collect, organize and retrieve large amounts of data?
?Knowledge of higher education and barriers to higher education for low-income and first-generation college bound students?
?Knowledge and ability to utilize office equipment and computer software
?Exceptional oral and written communication skills?
?Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends?
?Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, families and the community?
?Strong commitment to help students achieve their educational goals, regardless of their socio-ecodocumentational status?
?Ability to pass a criminal back-ground check for Latino Memphis and for the School District

Work with newly enrolled and current Hispanic-Latino college students to
ensure retention and to facilitate the transition between two-year and four-year institutions.
Essential Functions:
?Work as a contract employee of Latino Memphis, Inc. in the Latino Student Success initiative?
?Working from the assigned Community College to manage assigned students to ensure retention,
persistence and success?
?Assist participants in applying for re-admission or delayed admission to post-secondary education institutions?
?Develop an individualized educational plan for each participant to ensure completion and success in their program of choice?
?Monitor and access participants? progress in achieving individualized education plan goals and make adjustments to the plan based on the progress and changing needs of the participant?
?Coordinate with appropriate school personnel to link students to appropriate support services
?Develop daily schedule to include individual appointments, case management and record keeping
?Perform follow-up activities to monitor progress and determine unmet needs of students served?
?Maintain timely and accurate professional records and all data on each assigned participant?
?Maintain professional discretion and confidentiality of student information?
?Document and track all activities?

1. Manages and oversees all aspects of the Abriendo?Puertas / Latino Student Success
initiatives, including program implementation and managing High School and College
Mentors (Consejeros) .
2. Serves as the point person for Education initiatives at Latino Memphis and supports the
Latino Student Success Collaborative.
Essential Functions:
?Work as an employee of Latino Memphis, Inc. in the Latino Student Success initiative?
?Supervise Abriendo?Puertas College and High School Mentors
??Grow the Abriendo?Puertas program through expansion of services, increased number of mentors and volunteers, and scholarship development
?Work with other educational institutions and non-profit organizations to connect with youth and families
?Coordinate, in collaboration with the Director and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, the
creation and publishing of an annual Memphis-area Latino Student Success Report Card?
?Manage inter- and intra-related agency collaboration?
?Coordinate with appropriate institutional personnel in the linking of support services for students?
?Develop daily schedule to include individual appointments and record keeping?
?Assign students outside of the directly servicing institutions to Consejeros
?Responsible for all data input on each Consejero?
?Coordinates training for Consejeros on college search, retention, completion and transfer activities?
?Builds and strengthens strategic alliances with other organizations supporting higher eduction and
careers for Hispanic-Latino students
?Document and track all activities?
?Perform related tasks as assigned?
Organizational Relationships
?Report to the Director of Latino Memphis?
?Interact with leadership of postsecondary institutions to further the Abriendo?Puertas mission?
?Develop relationships with the Memphis Latino Student Success Collaborative Core members?
?Recruit other organizations to join the work of the Collaborative, ensuring a wide representation across all sectors in the community?
?Organize and coordinate regular Collaborative meetings?
?Represent the organization to the community in conjunction with the Director of Latino Memphis,
the Core members and other staff?
?Assist in the coordination of initiatives promoting college readiness and access efforts under the
direction of Latino Memphis?
?Participate in work-related travel as required?
?Attend evening and weekend activities on a regular basis?
