What's the threat? North Korean rhetoric, reality

TOKYO (AP) ? According to its official statements, North Korea is ready to go to the brink. But how serious are Pyongyang's threats?

This week, new U.N. sanctions punishing the North's successful December rocket launch have elicited a furious response from Pyongyang: strong hints that a third nuclear test is coming, along with bigger and better long-range missiles; "all-out action" against its "sworn enemy," the United States; and on Friday, a threat of "strong physical countermeasures" against South Korea if Seoul participates in the sanctions.

"Sanctions mean war," said a statement carried by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency.

A U.S. research institute said Friday that recent satellite photos of the site where nuclear tests were conducted in 2006 and 2009 show North Korea could be almost ready to carry out its threat.

In the face of international condemnation, North Korea can usually be counted on for such flights of rhetorical pique. In recent years it threatened to turn South Korea into a "sea of fire," and to wage a "sacred war" against its enemies.

If the past is any indication, its threats of war are overblown. But the chances it will conduct another nuclear test are high. And it is gaining ground in its missile program, experts say, though still a long way from seriously threatening the U.S. mainland.

"It's not the first time they've made a similar threat of war," said Ryoo Kihl-jae, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. "What's more serious than the probability of an attack on South Korea is that of a nuclear test. I see very slim chances of North Korea following through with its threat of war."

Although North Korea's leadership is undeniably concerned that it might be attacked or bullied by outside powers, the tough talk is mainly an attempt to bolster its bargaining position in diplomatic negotiations.

The impoverished North is in need of international aid and is eager to sign a treaty bringing a formal end to the Korean War, which ended nearly 60 years ago in a truce. It uses its weapons program as a wedge in the ever-repeating diplomatic dance with the U.S.-led international community, and there is no reason to believe this time is different.

"I see this as their way of testing the water," said Narushige Michishita, a North Korea expert at Tokyo's Graduate Institute of Policy Studies. "North Korea will probably never be able to defeat the United States in a war. But they are getting stronger."

In 2006 and 2009, North Korea carried out underground nuclear tests just after receiving U.N. sanctions for launching long-range rockets. The latest barrage of rhetoric comes after the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to condemn the successful Dec. 12 rocket launch and further expand sanctions against Kim Jong Un's regime. Pyongyang replied with its threat of more launches and possibly another nuclear test.

"Settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words," said Thursday's statement from the National Defense Commission, which promised "a new phase of the anti-U.S. struggle that has lasted century after century."

North Korea has long insisted that its rocket launches were peaceful attempts to put a satellite in orbit, while the U.S. and United Nations consider them illegal tests of missile technology. This week, however, Pyongyang, made it clear that one goal of its rocket program is to attack the United States.

But its ability to do so is limited, say experts who believe North Korea still has technological kinks to work out in its nuclear devices. It is thought to be unable to make a nuclear weapon small enough to be mounted on a missile, so it needs to test that technology as well.

Another big issue is money.

In his first speech to his people, the young leader, Kim, who is still believed to be in his 20s, said North Korea will continue its "military first" policy. But for a nation that chronically struggles to feed its own people, resources are limited. And because of trade restrictions, acquiring parts for its weapons from abroad is increasingly difficult.

Despite December's successful launch, North Korea's ability to get missiles off the launch pad is less than reliable. In April, a similar rocket splintered into pieces over the Yellow Sea. Days later, North Korea showed off what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile, but many experts who reviewed footage of the rockets said they were clearly fakes.

The North does, however, appear to be making some progress.

Japan's Defense Ministry, in an assessment of the December launch presented to the prime minister on Friday, said the North's best designs probably give its missiles a range of more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles), according to Japan's Kyodo news service. That would be enough to reach the West Coast of the United States. A South Korean defense official said Friday that Seoul agrees with that assessment.

The Japanese report warned that Pyongyang's missile technology has "entered a new stage" that is of serious concern to the international community. Japan is particularly wary of North Korea's capabilities because all of its islands are well within striking distance. Japan also hosts about 50,000 U.S. troops, whose bases would be a tempting target if Pyongyang were to try to make good on its threats.

"There has been a tendency to underestimate what North Korea can do in the space and missile field, and possibly with technology in general," U.S. nuclear expert Jeffrey Lewis wrote recently on his Arms Control Wonk blog. He noted that debris recovered from the wreckage of the December rocket's first stage indicates that most of it was made in North Korea.

North Korea claims the right to build nuclear weapons as a defense against the United States, which stations more than 28,000 troops in South Korea.

It is believed to have enough weapons-grade plutonium for about four to eight bombs, according to nuclear scientist Siegfried Hecker, who visited North Korea's nuclear complex in 2010. And in 2009, Pyongyang also declared that it would begin enriching uranium, giving it a second way to make atomic weapons.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday that he has seen no outward sign that North Korea will follow through soon on its plan to conduct a test, but added that doesn't mean preparations aren't under way.

A U.S. research institute said Friday that recent satellite photos of the Punggye-ri site where nuclear tests were conducted in 2006 and 2009 reveal that over the past month roads have been kept clear of snow and that North Koreans may have been sealing the tunnel into a mountainside where a nuclear device would be detonated.

The analysis was provided to The Associated Press by 38 North, the website of U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. The latest image was taken Wednesday.

38 North concludes that the Punggye-ri site "appears to continue to be at a state of readiness that would allow the North to move forward with a test in a few weeks or less once the leadership in Pyongyang gives the order."

U.S. officials confirmed Friday that the U.S. has seen some trucks moving around the site. One official said the U.S. is not ruling out that the test could happen in the near future.

But the officials cautioned that, as in previous tests, because it would be done underground, the U.S. may not know much before it actually happens. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence matters publicly.

Quitting Smoking Before Cancer Surgery Best, Study Finds - Drugs ...

FRIDAY Jan. 25, 2013 -- Cancer patients who smoked up until their surgery were more likely to take up the habit again compared to those who quit earlier, a new study finds.

The study from the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., included lung cancer and head and neck cancer patients who quit smoking before or immediately after surgery. They were followed for a year after the surgery.

"Sixty percent of patients who smoked during the week prior to surgery resumed smoking afterward, contrasted with a 13 percent relapse rate for those who had quit smoking prior to surgery," study corresponding author Vani Nath Simmons said in a Moffitt news release.

The significantly lower smoking relapse rate for those who quit smoking before surgery shows the need to encourage patients to quit smoking when they're diagnosed with cancer, the researchers said.

The investigators also noted that most of the patients who began smoking again did so shortly after surgery, which shows the importance of anti-smoking programs for patients both before and after surgery.

The study also found that patients were more likely to resume smoking if they had a high amount of fear about cancer recurrence, had a higher risk for depression, and were less likely to believe in their ability to quit smoking.

"Cancer patients need to know that it's never too late to quit," Simmons said. "Of course, it would be best if they quit smoking before getting cancer; but barring that, they should quit as soon as they get diagnosed. And with a little assistance, there is no reason that they can't succeed."

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Awards $1.68 Million to ...

The medical device giant had received complaints from doctors about the device, the Articular Surface Replacement, or A.S.R., even as it started marketing a version of it in 2005 in the United States. The A.S.R.?s flaw caused it to shed large quantities of metallic debris after implant and the model failed an internal 2007 test in which engineers compared its performance to another company hip implant, the documents show.

Still, executives of the company?s DePuy Orthaepedics unit kept selling the A.S.R. even as it was being abandoned by an increasing number of surgeons who were working as consultants to the company. DePuy executives discussed ways of fixing the defect but apparently never did so, the records suggest.

The documents were introduced Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court by plaintiffs? lawyers during opening arguments in the first A.S.R.-related lawsuit to go to trial. The company faces more than 10,000 lawsuits in the United States in connection with the device. An estimated 93,000 patients worldwide received an A.S.R., about one-third of them in the United States.

For their part, DePuy executives insisted before the A.S.R.?s recall in mid-2010 that the implant was working well despite years of complaints from doctors that it was failing early. In late 2009, the company announced plans to phase out the model but said it was doing so because of slowing sales, not safety concerns.

In opening arguments, a lawyer for DePuy, Alexander Calfo, reiterated those positions, telling jurors that DePuy had acted ethically throughout the entire A.S.R. episode.

?The evidence will show that DePuy acted as an extremely responsible manufacturer,? Mr. Calfo said.

But a lawyer for Loren Kransky, the plaintiff in the case, painted a far different picture of DePuy?s behavior for jurors in his opening arguments.

The lawyer, Michael Kelly, also introduced a number of internal records which suggested that the concern of company executives for profits might have exceeded their worries about patients. For example, Mr. Kelly said, DePuy officials never told doctors that the A.S.R. had failed an internal performance test against another company hip.

?They did not report the data to American doctors,? said Mr. Kelly. ?They changed the test and tested it against other things until they found one it could beat.?

The A.S.R. represents one of the biggest medical device failures in recent decades. According to DePuy?s internal estimates, it will fail within five years in about 40 percent of patients who got one. That figure is eight times the failure rate of most orthopedic implants.

The A.S.R. belonged to a once-popular class of hip implants introduced about a decade ago as a way of trying to address problems associated with hips made from traditional materials like metal and plastic. But surgeons have largely abandoned them because their components can grind together, releasing metallic debris that damages a patient?s tissue and bone.

The A.S.R. was sold in two versions, one used in an alternative hip replacement called resurfacing and one used in standard hip replacement. Only the version used in standard replacements was sold in the United States.

In 2003, DePuy began selling the resurfacing version of the A.S.R. outside the United States in an effort to catch up with a competing device known as the Birmingham hip. But by 2005, some doctors began telling DePuy that the A.S.R. was failing quickly after implant and company consultants soon stopped using it, records show.

The problem, internal DePuy records indicate, was the design of the cup component that fit into a patient?s hip socket. The cup, which was used in both the resurfacing and standard versions of the A.S.R., had an inside groove against which a surgeon pressed a tool in order to implant the component.

Chicken guts, pork lard will fuel Mazda's race car

20 hrs.

Mazda hopes ride a tankful of chicken guts, beef tallow and pork lard to victory at the grueling Rolex 24 endurance race in Daytona over the coming weekend.

No, the maker isn?t sponsored by the local butcher.? It?s powering its new Mazda6 race car with a custom-made fuel blend that starts out with scraps from Tyson Foods. That organic glop has been converted into a special bio-fuel that will stoke the new SkyActiv-D clean diesel engine that will power Mazda?s entry into the new Grand-Am GX Class at the 24-hour race.

?It?s meat packing residue,? explains John Doonan, the director of Mazda?s ambitious motorsports operation.? And the ultimate blend is so clean the Mazda6 race car won?t need particulate filters or any of the other devices used on other diesel-powered race cars.?

Indeed, Mazda is not the only manufacturer that has switched from gasoline or ethanol to diesel power on the track.? Audi has dominated the Le Mans endurance circuit for much of the past decade, in fact, with a series of racers that routinely leave the competition struggling to keep up.??

The Detroit Bureau:?Nissan Likely to Launch a Number of US-made Hybrids in the Next Year

That?s helped put the spotlight on the German manufacturers focus on the diesel technology it?s putting on the street.? At the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, the maker announced it would soon add four new diesel models to its U.S. line-up.

European car buyers are well aware of diesel?s advantages ? it delivers near hybrid levels of fuel economy and far more power than gas-electric powertrains. Americans, however, are just beginning to catch on. So, it?s Mazda that now needs to get the message across as it prepares to introduce its own new diesel engine to the U.S. market.

In fact, the engine that will be powering the Mazda6 on the Daytona track started out as one of the first production diesels the maker assembled back in Japan last year.??

The Detroit Bureau:?Putting Pedal to the Metal? Here's How Much Extra Fuel You'll Use

The new Mazda6 SkyActiv-D racecar will have some big tire tracks to fill, replacing the maker?s successful RX-8 model.? Mazda will also field two new teams starting with the 2013 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.? It will lose its two previous teams, including Dempsey Racing, which was owned by actor and motorsports fanatic Patrick Dempsey. The maker gave its racing team a mandate, explains Doonan, ?to use as many production components as possible. The only things we?ve changed are the crankshaft, pistons and connecting rod.?? And with good reason considering the track-tuned SkyActiv-D will be churning out 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, about double what a street-legal 2014 diesel-powered Mazda6 will be making when it goes on sale later this year.

It?s a risky move to launch a new car with new teams and drivers but Mazda is hoping it will pay off and put the brand in the spotlight this year.

The maker has been going through plenty of changes everywhere you look.? It has largely wound down a decades-old relationship with Ford Motor Co. and stopped producing the Mazda6 at a plant the two makers jointly operated in suburban Detroit.

Mazda, meanwhile, has established several new ? if more limited ? alliances with Toyota and Fiat.? The Italian maker?s Alfa Romeo division plans to work with Mazda to develop a new sports car that both companies can sell.? Ford Mazda, it will serve as the replacement for its aging Miata 2-seater. Toyota, meanwhile, will base a replacement for its subcompact Yaris off the Mazda3 platform. And Mazda will produce some of the new models for Toyota out of a plant it is currently setting up in Mexico.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Mazda betting on alliances with Toyota, Fiat

More alliances could follow, according to Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi.? That could help the small Japanese automaker reduce the hefty expense of developing new products.? Not that Mazda is waiting for assistance.? It has been rolling out an assortment of new models, such as the well-reviewed CX-5 crossover.?

It has also introduced a new concept, dubbed SkyActiv, that it claims can compete with the efficiency of rivals? hybrid products. At its heart, SkyActiv is a new approach to powertrain technology but it also entails steps Mazda engineers are taking to improve the overall efficiency of the maker?s vehicles, down to finding ways to reduce the weight of the lugnuts on the wheels of the new Mazda6.

The all-new version of the sedan will be offered with both the new SkyActiv gasoline and diesel powertrains.

Unfortunately for those who might opt for the SkyActiv-D, they?ll likely have a hard time finding the synthetic diesel Mazda will use on the race track. The renewable blend was developed by Dynamic Fuels, a 50/50 joint venture of Tyson Foods and Syntroleum, and it is being produced at a $150 million refinery which opened up near Baton Rouge, Louisiana two years ago.?

Why Tyson? Because the maker has had to find ways to dispose of 1.5 million pounds of chicken, pork and beef products every single day. Now it can avoid the cost of dumping that offal and potential make some money from it.? The refinery is producing about 75 million gallons of synthetic diesel annually and could ramp up to provide even more.

A number of refiners are working to come up with bio-fuels. The most readily available are ethanol blends. They?ve been controversial because, until now, most have used food stocks, such as corn ? though newer, so-called cellulosic production methods can create the alcohol fuel from waste.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Toyota Settles First of 100s of Wrongful Death, Injury Lawsuits

Many of the new bio-diesel blends use waste products ? though a select number of filling stations near San Francisco recently began offering a blend created from algae.

Dynamic Fuels ultimately hopes to begin selling some of its synthetic diesel to the public and is shooting for a $5 a gallon price tag, notes Mazda?s U.S. CEO Jim O?Sullivan.

Some shuttle buses operated by Alamo and National Car Rental are already testing it on the street. And the U.S. Navy is also using the bio-diesel blend on some of its ships.

Those who buy the new Mazda6 with SkyActiv-D will have to settle for conventional, petroleum-based diesel fuel. But the maker is hoping that with a 14.5 gallon tank of distilled guts under its hood, the Mazda6 race car will dominate its field when the flag drops at Daytona on Saturday.

More than 2,000 honor slain NM family

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? More than 2,000 people gathered at an Albuquerque church to remember five members of a New Mexico family gunned down in their home last weekend. There were also prayers for the 15-year-old son and brother charged with the killings.

Following a police escort, chaplains and members of the Albuquerque Fire Department lined the procession. Bagpipes played at the memorial service Friday and the urns of former pastor Greg Griego, his wife Sarah and their three young children were carried into the one of the city's largest churches.

Family members recalled Greg Griego's lumbering walk, his hearty laugh and his endless commitment to helping others to turn their lives around. His wife, known for her cooking, and their children were just as much a part of that ministry. The family was always a front-row fixture at church services.

The crowd prayed for the Griegos and for their son Nehemiah, who remains in custody.

Annette Griego, one of Greg Griego's adult daughters, told those at the service that her father was a man whose heart was after God.

"My dad never gave up on me. He never gave up on any of us. He never stopped giving us Jesus and so I know he would want us to do the exact same thing for our brother, Nehemiah," she said. "So if you wonder where we stand, we stand alongside our brother."

"We stand confident that God will take this tragedy and use it for something good," she said.

News of the slayings has reverberated throughout the community, where Greg Griego ? a former gang member turned pastor ? was known for his work with jail inmates, his service at local rescue missions and his spiritual guidance for firefighters and members of the military.

Friends said Greg Griego and his teenage son went on missions to Mexico and that the boy was a talented drummer who played with the church's youth band.

On Friday, family, friends and members of the Calvary Albuquerque church who watched the boy grow up continued to struggle, trying to make sense of the tragedy.

Nehemiah Griego was just a normal teen to Vince Harrison, a former police officer who had known the family for about 10 years through his security work at the church.

"He did not fit the criteria of a kid who was crazy into guns and wanted to hurt people. That's absolutely false," Harrison said.

Nehemiah Griego is facing murder and child abuse charges in the deaths of his parents and three younger siblings ? all found shot to death inside their rural home south of Albuquerque on Jan. 19.

Detectives were at the home for two days collecting evidence. They also have been reviewing text messages and calls between the boy and his 12-year-old girlfriend and security video from Calvary, where the teen apparently spent much of the day following the early morning shootings.

After the killings, authorities allege that Nehemiah Griego reloaded his parents' two semi-automatic rifles and put them in the family van and planned to gun down Wal-Mart shoppers.

Public defender Jeff Buckels said he will consult with mental health experts and investigate the effects of violent video games. Authorities have said Griego liked to play "Modern Warfare" and "Grand Theft Auto."

Four Sensational Facts About Gold Investing That You Might Not ...

1. Gold Has Been A Consistent Performer Over The Decade

While the precious metal did not shoot the lights out in 2012, gold's bull rally goes on. It ended the year up 7%, making it a phenomenal 12th year in a row that gold rose in value. In a special gold bar version of the

Periodic Table below, you can easily see gold's rotation among the commodities from year to year.

What's fascinating is the three-year rising pattern relative to other commodities that emerges when you focus on the bars. Over the past 10 years, gold has risen in position compared with the others for three years in a row, then fallen in relative position in the fourth year before repeating the cycle. Will it follow the same pattern and be in the top half of the Periodic Table in 2013?

2. Gold Should Remain A Hot Commodity In 2013

Considering the global easing cycle and the continuous running of monetary printing presses, I believe the Fear Trade will continue to be a driver of gold over the next several months. Take a look at the projected rise in the balance sheets as a percent of GDP from the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England over 2013. The ECB is estimated to have a balance sheet that is nearly 50% of its

GDP by the end of the year. The Bank of Japan is right behind the ECB, with its balance sheet projected to be nearly 35% of GDP. As Mike Shedlock of Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis said, "The race is on to see which central bank can load up its balance sheet with the most garbage the fastest."

stocks chart

My friend Ian McAvity also summed it up well in his Deliberations on World Markets: "Gauging from the panicky actions of the major central banks, I would still prefer to own gold than their paper." With the monetary printing presses warm and real interest rates in the red, gold will likely glimmer for another year.

3. Gold Is The Least Volatile Commodity On The Table

Given the fact that every gold move is analyzed and dissected by the media, it may surprise you that this precious metal was actually the least volatile of the 14 commodities. Its rolling 12-month standard deviation (sigma) over the past 10 years has been 14%, compared to the most volatile commodity, (nickel), which has a rolling 12-month sigma of nearly 60%.

Here's another way to look at the surprisingly low volatility of gold. Take a look at the frequency of 10% moves up or down over any 20 trading days. The metal is only slightly more volatile than the S&P 500. Gold companies, crude oil and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index have all experienced more up-and-down moves than gold.

Whereas card counting at a blackjack table can get you booted from casinos and barred for life, as an investor you are allowed to take full advantage of counting the 10% moves.

gold prices

Over 2013, you can count on gold moving in either direction, so even if the metal experiences extreme volatility to the downside, regardless of what the headlines report, Investor Alert readers know that any dip in price offers potential buying opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that it's prudent to invest only 5% to 10% of your total portfolio in gold and gold stocks.

4. The Last 4 Years Were Better Than You Thought

Recently, I showed how the S&P 500 Index and gold bullion significantly outperformed the iShares Core Total US Bond ETF. Many investors asked about gold stock performance. As you can see below, the NYSE Arca Gold BUGS Index (HUI) experienced quite a gain, increasing more than 50% on a cumulative basis since the beginning of 2009. Both considerably outperformed the bond investment.

What's sensational news to precious metals investors sometimes doesn't make the cut as breaking news. Shortly before I was scheduled to talk to CNBC about silver on Friday, my appearance was canceled as reporters preempted my investing insights for what was viewed as a more sensational story about millionaire and fugitive John McAfee.

In the meantime, I'll continue sharing these fascinating facts about gold, silver and other commodities with investors at Cambridge House's Resource Investment Conference in Vancouver and the World Money Show in

Orlando, FL. Hope to see you there!

Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for U.S. Oil ... - Peak Oil News

Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for U.S. Oil and Gas Discovery and Production thumbnail

Oil production in the US peaked in 1970. The easy ?sweeter? stuff has been extracted. What remains is deeper in the ground or farther off-shore, requires much more energy to extract, and is more toxic to produce. It takes energy to make energy. Energy Return on Investment (EROI) also known as?ERoEI?(Energy Returned on Energy Invested), is a common way of expressing the efficiency of the energy production process. The EROI for oil and gas, as well as other fossil fuels,?has been falling for decades (see chart below). If it was a financial stock, you would have sold it years ago.

The Ouroboros

It is important to track EROI. Producing a barrel of oil consumes more and more energy, thus exponentially?accelerating the consumption of the oil. It is like the mythic Ouroboros?-?a snake eating its own tail. A high EROI is better than low EROI. As we approach an EROI of 1:1 (e.g.?consuming 1 barrel of oil to produce 1 barrel of oil), it?s game over ? why bother. Prudent nations would want to have a comprehensive plan for transitioning to alternative fuels and renewable energy, well before we hit peak oil. Oh well? More on that in a minute (see The Hirsch Report, below).

This week, a team of researchers published a detailed analysis of the EROI for oil and gas industry. The report,?A New Long Term Assessment of Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for U.S. Oil and Gas Discovery and Production, is authored by researchers at?State University of New York and Boston University.

From the abstract:

Oil and gas are the main sources of energy in the United States. Part of their appeal is the high Energy Return on Energy Investment (EROI) when procuring them. We assessed data from the United States Bureau of the Census of Mineral Industries, the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Oil and Gas Journal for the years 1919?2007 and from oil analyst Jean Laherrere to derive EROI for both finding and producing oil and gas. We found two general patterns in the relation of energy gains compared to energy costs: a gradual secular decrease in EROI and an inverse relation to drilling effort. EROI for finding oil and gas decreased exponentially from 1200:1 in 1919 to 5:1 in 2007. The EROI for production of the oil and gas industry was about 20:1 from 1919 to 1972, declined to about 8:1 in 1982 when peak drilling occurred, recovered to about 17:1 from 1986?2002 and declined sharply to about 11:1 in the mid to late 2000s. The slowly declining secular trend has been partly masked by changing effort: the lower the intensity of drilling, the higher the EROI compared to the secular trend. Fuel consumption within the oil and gas industry grew continuously from 1919 through the early 1980s, declined in the mid-1990s, and has increased recently, not surprisingly linked to the increased cost of finding and extracting oil.

As we deplete the earths global oil reserves, we need to dig deeper and deeper ? typically drilling over 100 million feet of well per year. It takes enormous amounts of energy and resources to do that, not to mention the energy consumed just to figure out where to drill. The next two charts show the EROI for oil and gas discovery and production.

eroi eroei discovery for US oil and gas

(source: Guilford, Hall, Connor, Cleveland ?A New Long Term Assessment of Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for U.S. Oil and Gas Discovery and Production.? Sustainability 2011, 3, 1866-1887)

For the Discovery chart above, note that in the early days of oil exploration, the stuff was practically bubbling out of the ground, so it was much easier to figure out where to drill ? hence the EROI over 1,200 in 1920. As the US industrial age found its legs, oil consumption accelerated. Demand for more and more oil quickly consumed the easy stuff, and the EROI fell rapidly. As we hit peak oil production in 1970, the EROI fell below 10:1. I inset a blowup of the chart, from 1950 to 2010, so that we can see how EROI has since remained firmly in the single digits.

eroi eroei production for US oil and gas

(source: Guilford, Hall, Connor, Cleveland ?A New Long Term Assessment of Energy Return on Investment (EROI) for U.S. Oil and Gas Discovery and Production.? Sustainability 2011, 3, 1866-1887)

The EROI for Production is trending lower too. Variations in any given year are largely dependent on how much drilling it takes to produce the oil. ?Typically about 2 barrels of oil equivalent are consumed per foot of well drilled. In years where there was a lot of drilling, the EROI would be lower.

A more intuitive way to look at this trend is as dollars per barrel of oil. The chart below is from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Annual Energy Review for 2011. It shows the cost to add each additional barrel of oil to US reserves.

expenditures per barrel of reserve additions, 1975 to 2008, cost per barrel of oil, chart

COE (crude oil equivalent) measures the cost of adding 5.8 million BTUs regardless of whether the resource is oil, natural gas, or natural gas liquids. (source: EIA, 2011 Annual Energy Review)

As I mentioned above, the easy oil has been extracted. What remains is increasingly difficult to get to and refine (ultra-deep, off-shore, tar sands, shale-rock fracking, etc). ?We should expect these prices to continue their trend higher.

The Hirsch Report

In 2005, the US Department of Energy published?Peaking of World Oil Production: Impacts, Mitigation, and Risk Management, which came to be known as the Hirsch Report, named for the reports lead author, Robert Hirsch.?It examined the time frame for the occurrence of peak oil, the necessary mitigating actions, and the likely impacts based on the timeliness of those actions. From the report:

The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking.

The report estimated that oil production would peak in about 2015. It laid out three possible scenarios:

A scenario analysis was performed, based on crash program implementation worldwide ? the fastest humanly possible. Three starting dates were considered:
1. When peaking occurs;
2. Ten years before peaking occurs; and
3. Twenty years before peaking.

The timing of oil peaking was left open because of the considerable differences of opinion among experts. Consideration of a number of implementation scenarios provided some fundamental insights, as follows:

  • Waiting until world oil production peaks before taking crash program action leaves the world with a significant liquid fuel deficit for more than two decades.
  • Initiating a mitigation crash program 10 years before world oil peaking helps considerably but still leaves a liquid fuels shortfall roughly a decade after the time that oil would have peaked.
  • Initiating a mitigation crash program 20 years before peaking offers the possibility of avoiding a world liquid fuels shortfall for the forecast period.

The reason why such long lead times are required is that the worldwide scale of oil consumption is enormous ? a fact often lost in a world where oil abundance has been taken for granted for so long. If mitigation is too little, too late, world supply/demand balance will have to be achieved through massive demand destruction (shortages), which would translate to extreme economic hardship. On the other hand, with timely mitigation, economic damage can be minimized.

We are on a short fuse. As we ride along the top of peak oil production, spikes in demand, or disruptions in supply, will cause rapid fluctuations in the price of oil. With no ability to provide alternatives, the economy will stutter, usually in the form of a recession, which has the side effect of reducing demand. Until we transition to alternative forms of energy, we will repeat the cycle of growth, followed by hitting the peak oil wall, followed by recession.

Small is Beautiful

And as the legendary economist E.F. Schumacher points out in his seminal book Small is Beautiful, to understand the true cost of an product or initiative, we must tally both the direct costs as well as the indirect costs. When we talk about oil and gas, what is the cost of CO2 spewing into our atmosphere? What is the cost of toxic chemicals leaking into our water systems? What is the cost to public health? What is the cost of each oil war? What is the cost of funding petro-dictatorships? What is the cost to the common wealth?

What is the cost?

While the EROI of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal plummet, the EROI for renewables such as wind and solar are trending strongly up, with EROIs five to twenty times higher than their fossil fuel counterparts.

Former CIA agent gets 30 months in leak case

Jacquelyn Martin/ AP file

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou, left, and defense attorney John Hundley, leave federal court in Alexandria, Va., in January 2012.

By Kari Huus, Staff Writer, NBC News

A former CIA agent was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Friday for revealing the identity of CIA operative involved in the agency?s harsh handling of alleged terrorists.

John Kiriakou, 48, who?was among the first government officials to confirm the CIA?s use of waterboarding and other harsh interrogation measures, had been accused of disclosing classified information to reporters and lying about the source of other information he published in a book.

But Kiriakou pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act by leaking?the identity of an agent to a reporter.?

The sentencing in federal court in Alexandria, Va., was the result of?a plea deal between defense and prosecutors. Kiriakou's defense team failed to persuade the judge that his release of information was the act of a whistle blower concerned about practices used in the war on terrorism in the name of the United States.

"I think 30 months is way too light," said U.S. District Court Judge Leonie M. Brinkema in Alexandria, Va. She went on to describe the damage that Kiriakou had caused the agency and the agent whose cover was made public, according to The New York Times' account.

"This is not a case of a whistleblower," Brinkema said.?"This is a case of a man who betrayed a solemn trust."

Many of the details of Kiriakou?s alleged disclosures were kept under wraps by the Justice Department in its original criminal filing,?the Washington Post??reported. But the complaint suggested that he provided information that was the basis for stories by the Times and other news organizations in 2008 and 2009 about sensitive post-9/11 CIA operations, it said.

The information included the capture and interrogation, including waterboarding, of key suspects, including Abu Zubaida and Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-described mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

Information and photographs supplied to journalists by Kiriakou ultimately came into play in the defense of these high-value detainees, the Justice Department said.

Kiriakou worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004.

After a 2007 interview with ABC News,?during which Kiriakou provided a description of the waterboarding?of Abu Zubaida, he was frequently sought out by the media for interviews.

He went on to publish his memoir, "The Reluctant Spy: My Secret Life in the CIA's War on Terror," in 2010.

Prosecutors accused Kiriakou of using media attention to get consulting work and sell copies of his book, the?Post reported.?

The FBI arrested him on?Jan. 23, 2012, and he pleaded guilty to a violation of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

Kiriakou did not speak at Friday?s proceedings. However, Kiriakou?s lawyer, Robert Trout, said his client did not intend to harm the United States or "cause injury to anyone."

"He was concerned about certain practices that were employed in the war against terror," Trout said.

Since 2009, the Obama administration has charged five other current or former government officials with leaking classified information, the Times reported.

Jindal: GOP 'Must Stop Being The Stupid Party' - Business Insider

AP

VP?

With President Barack Obama's well-received second inaugural address still fresh in Republican minds, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal articulated a new vision for the GOP Thursday night, calling on the party to "recalibrate the conservative compass" in order to make itself relevant to today's voters.

On paper, the speech ? the keynote address at this week's Republican National Committee winter meeting ? was a blunt challenge to Jindal's own party, which is still smarting from its meltdown in the 2008 and 2012 national elections. In a four-point outline, Jindal laid bare the fundamental weaknesses of the GOP's message and strategy, and delivered the first real Republican rebuttal to the liberal vision for America that Obama articulated on Monday.

Here are the highlights of Jindal's argument:

1. "America is not the federal government." Jindal's first argument basically calls on Republicans to end their singular focus on federal spending and the deficit, and start talking about other issues.

"A debate about which party can better manage the federal government is a very small and shortsighted debate," Jindal said. "If our vision is not bigger than that, we do not deserve to win?.We as Republicans have to accept that government number crunching ? even conservative number crunching ? is not the answer to our nation?s problems."

This is actually a very salient argument that gets at the core of GOP's message problems. Concerns about the federal deficit were a major factor in driving the Tea Party wave of 2010, and the issues have been central to Republicans since then. The result has been political paralysis and a one-dimensional Republican message that offers spending cuts rather than solutions. Meanwhile, poll after poll has shown that while voters are concerned about government spending in the abstract, they oppose any actual spending cuts.

Here's Jindal's key line: "We must not become the party of austerity. We must become the party of growth. Of course we know that government is out of control. The public knows that too. And yet we just lost an election."

2. "We believe in planting the seeds of growth in the fertile soil of your economy, where you live,
where you work, invest, and dream, not in the barren concrete of Washington. If it?s worth doing, block grant it to the states. If it?s something you don?t trust the states to do, then maybe Washington shouldn?t do it at all."

This is pretty standard anti-Washington rhetoric for a Republican politician with national aspirations, and establishes Jindal as a staunch states-rights crusader who sees federal government as an outdated failure. It's worth noting, however, that Jindal's anti-Washington argument is also a means to an end ? rather than simply pushing back against Democratic spending, he argues, Republicans need to "rethink nearly every social program in Washington," and come up with states-based alternatives.

3. "We must stop looking backward?.Nostalgia about the good old days is heart-warming, but the battle of ideas must be waged in the future."

4. "We must compete for every single vote. The 47 percent and the 53 percent. And any other
combination of numbers that adds up to 100 percent." (Obviously, this is a direct shot at Mitt Romney .)

5. "We must reject the notion that demography is destiny, the pathetic and simplistic notion that skin pigmentation dictates voter behavior?.The first step in getting the voters to like you is to demonstrate that you like them."

While some may argue that this strategy won't do much to solve the Republicans' problems with minority and youth voters, Jindal is taking a direct shot at conventional GOP campaign wisdom that argues Republican candidates will never win the minority vote, and therefore should not spend resources trying.

6. "We must stop being the stupid party. I'm serious. It's time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It's time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We?ve had enough of that."

Obviously, Jindal is taking aim at 2012 candidates like Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, who lost winnable Senate races after making inflammatory comments about rape. Significantly, Jindal isn't arguing for the GOP to give up its pro-life platform ? he's simply calling for the party to pick better candidates.

7. "We must stop insulting the intelligence of voters...We have to stop dumbing down our ideas and stop reducing everything to mindless slogans and tag lines for 30-second ads. We must be willing to provide details in describing our views." (Another shot at Romney.)?

8. "We are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, or big anything?.We are a populist party and need to make that clear."

But while Jindal's prescriptions seemed forceful in print, the delivery was reportedly lackluster, particularly for politician who is already considered a top contender for the GOP's 2016 presidential nomination. BuzzFeed's Zeke Miller wrote that the speech was "coolly-received" by the audience of RNC members. Yahoo's Chris Moody compared the speech to Jindal's first Obama rebuttal, his widely-panned response to the President's 2009 State of the Union address.

"Similar to 2009," Moody wrote, "the delivery may still need some work for a national debut.

Here are highlights from Wednesday?s Analyst Blog:

Prologis Inks Deal with Amazon

Prologis Inc (NYSE: PLD) ? a real estate investment trust (REIT) ? inked a build-to-suit deal with Amazon.com Inc (Nasdaq: AMZN) for constructing a distribution center at Prologis Park Tracy Phase II in Ca. This deal will likely strengthen Prologis? relationship with its high-end loyal customers.

Seattle, Wa.-based Amazon.com Inc. is one of the largest online retailers, with extensive operations worldwide. The company owns several strategic distribution facilities of Prologis in eight markets across the world.

The new facility will be developed on 90 acres of land at Prologis Park Tracy Phase II ? the 1.2 million square feet property that comprises two buildings. The park is strategically located between major ports and is also contiguous to major west coast metro areas, including the San Francisco bay area. On the completion of the construction of Amazon?s facility, Prologis Park Tracy Phase II will be fully occupied and comprise three distribution facilities, spanning approximately 2.2 million square feet.

We remain impressed with the company for taking such a step considering Amazon?s thriving e-Commerce business and continued loyalty towards the former. This, in turn, is anticipated to provide steady source of rental revenue for Prologis going forward.

Prologis has been providing industrial distribution warehouse space through build-to-suit deals in some of the busiest distribution markets across the globe. Accordingly, in Nov 2012, Prologis signed such an agreement with a leading food and beverage company for approximately 1.2 million square feet of space in Lancaster, south of Dallas. These agreements have enabled the company to gain a significant advantage over its competitors.

Prologis is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter 2012 results on Feb 6, 2013. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the company?s fourth-quarter FFO (funds from operations) is currently pegged at 41 cents per share.

Zacks Earnings ESP (Read: ZACKS EARNINGS ESP: A BETTER METHOD) for Plum Creek is +7.32% for the fourth quarter. This, along with its Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), makes us confident about a positive earnings surprise call.

Two of Prologis? peers ?

Winthrop Realty Trust (NYSE: FUR)

and

Brandywine Realty Trust (NYSE: BDN)

? also hold a Zacks Rank #2.

Note: FFO, a widely accepted and reported measure of the performance of REITs is derived by adding depreciation, amortization and other non-cash expenses to net income.

Earnings Preview: Kimberly Clark

Kimberly Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB) is set to report fourth quarter and full year 2012 results on January 25. Last quarter it posted a 1.5% positive surprise. Let?s see how things are shaping up for this announcement.

Growth Factors This Past Quarter

Kimberly Clark ?s cost saving initiatives, continued product innovation drove earnings growth in the third quarter.

Kimberly Clark has been hard hit by the ongoing macroeconomic challenges and volatility in cost. However the company is trying hard to combat the difficulty. Its cost saving program; FORCE (Focused on Reducing Costs Everywhere) is helping it to save costs through lean manufacturing and supply chain practices.

Kimberly Clark ?s leadership position in consumer product categories coupled with recent launch of many new products in the third quarter like Huggies Little Movers Slip-On diapers, Poise Hourglass Shape pads, Kleenex Cool Touch facial tissue, and improved Cottenelle bathroom tissue, added to revenue growth and market share of the company.

The company will be exiting the diaper category in Western and Central Europe, with the exception of the Italian market and will be divesting or exiting some lower-margin businesses in certain markets, mostly in the consumer tissue segment in order to improve underlying profitability and focus its resources on its strongest market positions and growth opportunities. The company will also streamline its European manufacturing footprint and administrative organization to align its cost structure with these strategic decisions. This will help it to improve margins in the coming quarter.

Earnings Whispers?

Our proven model does not conclusively show that Kimberly Clark is likely to beat earnings this quarter. That is because a stock needs to have both a positive earnings Expected Surprise Prediction (ESP) (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method) and a Zacks Rank of #1, 2 or 3 for this to happen. That is not the case here as shown below.

Negative Zacks ESP: The Most Accurate estimate stands at $1.33 while the Zacks Consensus Estimate is higher at $1.36. That is a difference of -2.21%.

Zacks Rank #3 (Hold): Kimberly Clark ?s Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) lowers the predictive power of ESP because the Zacks Rank #3 when combined with a negative ESP makes surprise prediction difficult.

P53 mutation hinders cancer treatment response

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Scientists from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) have discovered the workings of the gene that has been hindering treatment response in cancer patients. This discovery was made after 5 years of studying the mutant form of the p53 gene, the major tumor suppressor in humans, which is generally found mutated in over 50% of all type of human cancers.

The dominant-negative (DN) effect of the mutant p53 gene in cancers was found to affect the outcome of cancer treatment modalities. DN effect is a phenomenon whereby one copy of mutant p53 that exists in cancer cells inhibits the tumor suppressor activity of the other wild-type p53 copy when they co-exist. The result is that a patient may either have poor response or earlier relapse of tumours after their treatment.

The research findings is significant in that it offers hope to improve cancer treatment outcomes by selectively inhibiting mutant p53's DN effect through several methods by generating selective and specific inhibitory molecules specific for some of the common hot-spot p53 point mutations. There are currently no drugs or compounds that can alleviate DN effects of mutant p53.

In order to understand the specific roles of mutant p53 DN properties in regulating acute treatment response and long-term tumourgenesis, a team of five researchers led by NCCS Prof Kanaga Sabapathy, the Principal Investigator in the Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Head of the Division of Cellular & Molecular Research from NCCS, carried out experiments by generating genetically engineered knock-in mouse strains expressing varying levels of mutant p53. The results showed that DN effect is observed after acute p53 activation by a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs and irradiation, thereby affecting anti-cancer treatment. This breakthrough came after five years of intensive research.

It was found that mutant p53 have DN effects in a cell-type and dose-dependent manner, especially during acute p53 activation where p53 levels are elevated. Based on the above observations, efforts to generate specific inhibitors for the common hot spot p53 point mutations are underway. The inhibition of mutant p53 expression in cells carrying a wild-type and mutant p53 alleles can improve response to chemotherapeutic drugs.

In a further study, the researchers also questioned the possibility of the mutant p53 acquiring new functions (or Gain of Function) to drive carcinogenesis, transforming normal cells to cancerous cells. Their investigation comparing cells from genetically engineered mouse strains expressing 2 different types of p53 mutations: the R172H mutation versus the R246S mutation, which showed that Gain of Function (GOF) was found only in the former. This showed that GOF of mutated p53 is specifically dependent on mutation-type but not across all kinds of genetic mutations, highlighting diversity in properties of the different types of p53 mutations, thereby indicating that mutations found in human cancers can behave differently, and thus, need to be carefully assessed prior to treatment.

Thus, the existence of mutant p53 certainly has a negative impact on cancer treatment, whether it is through DN effect or GOF. Prof Sabapathy said that the team is now embarking on more research to determine the possibility of targeting mutant p53 without affecting wild-type p53 in human cells, paving way to clinical trials in the future to test the efficacy on cancer therapeutic response.

The research was supported by grants from the National Medical Research Council of Singapore and the Singapore Millennium Foundation to KS. The publication has been accepted and published by Cell Press, publisher of biomedical journals, in the journal Cancer Cell, on Dec. 10, 2012. Prof Sabapathy also teaches at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.
